Abstract

The eight coals that constitute the Argonne Premium Coal Sample Program have been measured by a modified X-ray diffraction technique from which the mass absorption coefficient for each coal was measured for copper Ka X-rays. With the use of its mass absorption coefficient, the diffracted intensity measured for each coal was converted to its absorption-corrected intensity, I'(2 ). From peak areas in (2 ) the abundances of -quartz, calcite, and pyrite were measured. The principal silicate(s) in each coal was(were) identified, and their abundances were crudely estimated from the absorption-corrected diffractograms.
