Abstract

Leaves were harvested from 26 cultivare of a single maple species, Acer platanoides, growing at two locations: Madison, WI in the United States and Wageningen in The Netherlands. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were obtained from these leaves and elemental analyses were performed for aluminum, calcium, chlorine, magnesium, manganese, and potassium. These data were analyzed statistically in a search for evidence of environmental or genetic effects. Although a theory predicts that the NMR signal from chloroplast water should shift its position in the spectrum by an amount proportional to Mn content, no such correlation was found. However, a strong correlation was found between NMR peak‐shifts from identical cultivare regardless of location. This result demonstrates that NMR spectra are not affected principally by mineral nutrition, but instead are under genetic control.
