Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how and under what circumstances licensed speech-language pathologists incorporate music within communication intervention and to better understand perceptions towards the incorporation of music within speech or language therapy. A survey was developed based on the review of related literature and then entered on the Qualtricsã server for data collection and analysis. Once IRB approval was secured, the survey was then disseminated via a Facebook group for licensed speech-language pathologists. The author used Qualtricsã to collect and analyze the data, which was then used to determine when and how music was added, as well as perceptions of effectiveness and benefits of music incorporation, to communication intervention settings.

Results from this survey showed that speech-language pathologists incorporate music within communication intervention often, and it is perceived to add value to therapy settings. However, there were differences in terms of when and how music was used and for which clients and diagnoses. The results indicated that participants found value in interprofessional collaboration between speech-language pathologists and music therapists within communication intervention environments.
