Abstract

Eighty-seven public mental health residential facility professionals participated in an investigation of perceptions of factors relating to membership and roles in an interdisciplinary habilitation team by rating their team's characteristics regarding communication, group behaviors, and team member participation. Data was collected utilizing Campion's Work Group Characteristics Measure, a 54-item assessment of 19 characteristics designed to help work groups effectively assess the effectiveness of their productivity. Teams were divided into three groups, based on professional discipline. Academics (Speech Therapists/Clinicians, Program Directors, Recreation Supervisors, Qualified Mental Retardation Professionals, Academic Teachers) were consistently significantly different from Psychologists in relation to communication, group behaviors, and team member participation. Social Professionals (Nurses, Social Workers, Social Work Supervisors, Dieticians) were significantly different from Psychologists in relation to communication and group behaviors. Limitations of the present study as well as implications for future research are discussed.
