The relationship between personal demographics and teacher emphasis on teaching selected character education objectives

Abstract

Whether it is spelled out in a school's curriculum or not, character education and value are being taught on a daily basis. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the personal demographics of Mississippi Family and Consumer Sciences teachers of Family Dynamics and the degree of emphasis that they place on teaching selected state mandated character education objectives. Family and Consumer Sciences teachers who were employed to teach Family Dynamics during the 1998-99 school year were asked to complete a personal demographics questionnaire and a Family Dynamics questionnaire. There were 134 questionnaires returned. Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Results of the study indicated that no relationship existed at the.05 alpha level between the personal demographics of Family and Consumer Sciences teachers of Family Dynamics and the degree of emphasis that they place on teaching selected character education objectives.
