Francis Poulenc: An approach to vocal problems and interpretation of "Tel jour telle nuit", and, "Tel jour telle nuit": Poulenc's approach to surreal atmospheres

Walter Ray Swan

Abstract

The spheres of these lectures focus on two aspects of Francis Poulenc's cycle Tel jour telle nuit . The first lecture focuses on locating and overcoming possible performance problem areas pertinent to the baritone fach. It also discusses the procedures of how to develop and achieve interpretive skills for this cycle. The second lecture focuses on what techniques and procedures the composer used in interpreting the poems of surrealist poet, Paul Eluard. Emphasis is placed on how the composer used conventional musical devices to achieve the surrealism of the text.
