Art from The Catalyst
The Tree of Life by Dawne Kennedy
Angela Dawne Kennedy, University of Southern Mississippi
The Kabbalah's central icon is a tree of life. I am a history major with a lifelong fascination in Nordic medievalism. Their central icon in their mythology is Yggdrasil, the tree of life. My family heritage is primarily Scottish and French, so the use of the colors from my old plaid and crest-- which my brother discovered after spending several years working on our genealogy--were incorporated into the artwork. The eye at the center stands for the unseen soul Da'ath as well as the eye sacrificed by Odin for knowledge. The branches spread upward and downward represent pathways for the spirit to connect the Universe, Ein Soph Air, and Odin with the human realm. It is a work of art encompassing the journey of the soul that is centered around the connections of family, life, and spirituality.
