In Shakespeare's Time: A Collection of Stories
Date of Award
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The creative dissertation is a collection of original short fiction written in English between 1995 and 1999. Many of the stories are set in the greater Chicago area while the rest are set in fictional cities in the Midwestern or Southern U.S. Stylistically the stories follow the contemporary American tradition of minimalist writers such as Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff, and Denis Johnson. The collection contains a panorama of characters to which the title, In Shakespeare's Time, is meant to allude. The phrase appears in the short story "Temps" where the image associated with it is that of the "ship of fools." That is to say the contemporary "fools" who appear in the stories are as oppressed and as dispensable as they were in Shakespeare's day.
