The purpose of this study is to provide the conductor of Karel Husa's Music for Prague 1968 with a practical guide for preparing the work for performance. The essay begins with a brief consideration of the stature and reputation of the work and of its origin. The paper next focuses on the challenges that a conductor of the work will encounter in seeking to bring about a competent and insightful performance. The study then suggests solutions to the following musical concerns of the work: rhythmic challenges, balance of the musical themes, and problems in intonation. The study closes with a brief examination of different interpretations of the work taken from recordings by five different ensembles performing Music for Prague 1968 .
