A descriptive investigation of demographic variables among state troopers, and the relationship between personality profiles and class rank in the Louisiana State Police Academy
This study presents a demographic profile of a typical class of cadets at the Louisiana State Trooper Academy. In addition, the specific purposes of this study were: (1) To examine cadets at the Louisiana State Trooper academy to determine which of the independent variables of age, height, weight, civil service test score, education background, military service, prior law enforcement experience, or family experience with law enforcement service have a significant effect on each cadet's class rank; and (2) To examine the same cadets to determine whether their personality type, as determined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, significantly affects their class rank. The results of the analysis of data collected during this study reveal that, with the exception of education background, the independent variables have no significant relationship to class rank; and that the cadet's personality type, as determined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, does not predispose him or her to academic success or failure in the law enforcement academy. It was specifically determined that the level of education a cadet had upon entering the Academy significantly affects his or her chance for success while enrolled (i.e., the higher the level of education, the more likely the success of the candidate).
