Behavioral improvement in children with ADHD: Independent and combined effects of behavioral treatment and medication

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative efficacy of a behavioral interventions and pharmacological interventions when used alone or when combined for increasing on-task behavior of 5 children with ADHD. Previous research has shown that multimodal treatment for ADHD is more beneficial than any one intervention when used alone. The results of the current study lie in contrast to the majority of the previous research. The participants who received pharmacological treatment did not achieve high levels of on-task behavior until combined intervention was implemented. The students who received behavioral intervention achieved high levels of on-task behavior immediately after implementation of the classroom intervention. The findings suggest that medication alone was not superior to combined treatment or a behavioral treatment.
