Description

In this panel discussion, we will learn from several editors who are using the University of Southern Mississippi's institutional repository, Aquila, as a publishing platform for an array of journals, ranging from a peer-reviewed journal with a publication history of over fifty years to newly-launched disciplinary journals to a multidisciplinary journal of undergraduate research. We will discuss the backgrounds of each publication, as well as some of the workflows these editors are using to manage the publications that they represent.

Dr. Teresa Welsh is co-managing editor of SLIS Connecting, an open-access, refereed e-journal that covers topics in library and information science. Dr. Welsh earned an M.L.I.S. and later a Ph.D. in information sciences from the University of Tennessee. She has taught at Southern Miss since summer 2003 and was awarded the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Education and Psychology, was one of 12 faculty chosen for the 2007-08 Learning Enhancement Center Podcasting Pilot Project, is a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Fellow, and is a member of the Friends of Cook Library Board. Since July 2015, she has served as Director for the School of Library and Information Science and since 2007, she has taught a British Studies LIS course each summer in London and Edinburgh.

Dr. Stacey A. Hall is the founding editor of the Journal of Sport Safety and Security. Dr. Hall’s expertise is in the area of sport safety and security management. She has published in leading international sport management, homeland security, and emergency management journals and has co-authored two textbooks – Global Sport Facility Operations Management and Security Management for Sports and Special Events. Additionally, she has been invited to publish in national magazines such as Athletic Management, Athletic Administration, and Security Magazine. Dr. Hall has been referred to as one of the nation’s leading experts in sport security with interviews in USA Today, ESPN the Magazine, CBS New York, and also appeared on a live national broadcast of ESPN Outside the Lines. Dr. Hall was one of 150 experts from across the globe invited to attend the first International Sport Security Conference in Doha, Qatar. Dr. Hall has presented at international and national conferences, and conducted invited presentations for U.S. federal and state agencies, college athletic conferences, and professional sport leagues, including Major League Soccer (MLS). She is currently an associate dean and chair of the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Sport Management at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Dr. Jae-Hwa Shin, Ph.D., MPH, is a professor and head of the public relations sequence in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has focused on building public relations theories through the lens of strategic conflict management. Her research areas also include the agenda-building process and health communication. She has co-authored three books including Think Public Relations and Public Relations Today: Managing Competition and Conflict, as well as numerous book chapters. Prior to earning her doctoral degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, she worked for a decade as public relations director for the Korea Economic Research Institute as well as the Center for Free Enterprise of the Federation of Korea Industries, whose members include such major international companies as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses such as public relations introduction, public relations research, conflict/crisis/issue/risk/reputation management, public relations campaigns, theories, and research methods. Dr. Shin also serves as the faculty advisor for The Catalyst, the university's journal of undergraduate research.

Hiba Tahir is the Editor-in-Chief of USM’s undergraduate research journal The Catalyst and serves as research assistant to internationally bestselling author David McRaney. She is the former managing editor of The Student Printz, the University of Southern Mississippi’s student newspaper, which also published her popular weekly humor column “Swipe Right.” She will graduate with a B.A. in English and news-editorial journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2018.
