Abstract

This dissertation is composed of five short stories about family life. All of the narrators are African-American, and every story is set in the rural American South. Together, these stories constitute half of the short story collection on which I have worked for the past several years. Major themes explored herein include the struggle to maintain a sense of pride in African-American traditions, the damaging effects of racial shame/shaming, and the loss of one’s family via death and abandonment.
