Abstract
The following creative writing dissertation, Bosses of Light and Sound, includes a critically informed introduction that situates my stories within the broader conversation of contemporary literary fiction. The included short stories explore the various ways in which characters get in the way of themselves. Although the characters in the collection often face such outside threats as mountain lions, malfunctioning technologies, and manic bosses, the most important conflicts occur on the insular level. The collection is also deeply interested in exploring the various ways in which characters struggle to understand one another. Taken in sum, these stories indicate that sometimes the most profound forms of suffering are those that occur internally.
