Abstract
This dissertation, Dinner Before Marriage, includes a collection of short stories and a critical introduction. My stories explore characters dealing with internal conflict. Each character faces a difficult situation—from dealing with drug-addicted friends to the deaths of loved ones. I am interested in how the techniques I use in my fiction—for example, perspective—provide readers with access to the ways in which the characters view the world. These stories emphasize characters’ internal states and demonstrate how these characters can reach epiphanies and achieve lasting change through self-reflection and meaningful interactions with others.
