Abstract
This dissertation, Before the Snakes Came, pairs a collection of short fiction and a critical introduction aimed at contextualizing my work within contemporary Southern Literature and the genre of the grotesque. The stories explore themes of masculinity, femininity, scandal, and discretion and were written between 2016 and 2020 during my study in the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi.
