Abstract
Woman on Canvas contains a collection of poems written in a variety of forms, some of which, such as the villanelle and sonnet, originated in Europe while others, such as the tanka and haibun, were developed in Japan. Other poems are written in free verse. This work includes poems about war but unlike most such poetry, these focus on the “home front” and the lives of parents, wives, and children who remain behind. Another frequent subject concerns my experiences teaching at a Title I school serving mostly poor and minority students, many of whom were immigrants. Other poems reflect on motherhood and aging. A few view the world form the perspective of sociobiology, a theory positing that human behavior has its roots in evolutionary history
