Abstract
Harbingers is a creative dissertation of eleven stories with a critical introduction that situates the dissertation within the larger canon of environmentally invested literature. The stories adopt a variety of narratorial perspectives to examine the lives of individual women who face difficult truths about themselves and others. Young girls lose jobs and family members. Mothers grieve children and choices. Each character lives in an environment that forces her to acknowledge her own actions as a woman in a society of social and environmental inequity. Throughout the collection, both the characters and their surroundings begin to transform, moving toward futures where past dynamics become untenable, and survival requires new modes of being.
