Abstract
"Mudlark" and Other Stories is a collection of eight short stories which explore contemporary anxieties in both domestic and international settings. The stories become increasingly speculative throughout the collection. Content ranges from an epistolary story involving a miraculously pregnant cow, to a Michigan high schooler seeking entry into a swimmers’ cult, to a horror movie sound engineer dealing with unending hiccups and a mysterious monster, to a speculative account of mudlarking in London. The stories are preceded by a critical preface which seeks to clarify classifications of fiction, including popular, genre, speculative, and literary fiction, and explore how these classifications have influenced the included stories.
