Abstract
Monsters is a collection of short stories written during my time at the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi. The first five stories are set in Australia and are about two men, Ryan and Sam, who have a complicated, on-again off-again relationship while dealing with substance abuse, internalized homophobia, and the shifting definitions of commitment and romance in the gay community. The final three stories are stand-alone pieces that deal with these same issues, but also interrogate xenophobia, religious oppression, and the dangers of group-think.
