Abstract

Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is a rare but life-threatening event that student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) may not be prepared to manage due to minimal exposure in the clinical setting (Gitman et al., 2019). The occurrence of LAST can result in cardiovascular collapse and death (Barash et al., 2017). Therefore, the immediate recognition and treatment of LAST is a skill all anesthesia providers should possess.

The purpose of the project was to provide The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP) an objective structured clinical examination utilizing the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) checklist as a guide to create the OSCE on the prevention, identification, and treatment of LAST. Then a demonstration video based on response to LAST was created in the USM simulation lab. The OSCE template and ASRA Checklist were distributed to a panel of experts who were asked to evaluate the project through an online, anonymous survey tool using QualtricsÓ. Data collected determined that the implementation of an OSCE on the prevention, identification, and treatment of LAST has the potential to benefit the USM NAP as an examination tool.
