Abstract

Since the second half of the 20th century, the marimba has been established as an innovative instrument in concert music. This is due to the outstanding works by renowned marimbists such as Keiko Abe, Ney Rosauro, Clair Omar Musser, and Emmanuel Séjourné. With the improvement of the marimbas with technology and standardization of the dimensions of the instruments worldwide, the performance of marimba music has become some of the most frequently performed percussion repertoire, bringing the marimba to a new position.

With the spread of the marimba as a solo concert instrument, the international repertoire emerged with features linked to specific countries and regions. The marimba repertoire in the United States is peculiar for its technicality, while avant-garde features are more characteristic of Asian styles. The European style is also notable for being close to Western music art. However, a research gap is created by a need for the international presence of Latin American works in the international community. Why does a challenge exist in spreading pieces by Latin American and, more specifically, Mexican repertoire internationally? In response to these questions, I present two original compositions and one original arrangement for a marimba solo, incorporating traditional Mexican elements into modern marimba techniques to contribute to marimba literature by creating pieces that identify and showcase the distinctive Mexican style. My aim with this is to enrich the international marimba music culture by contributing aspects of the Mexican solo marimba style.
