Abstract

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to produce a guide for student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) on the safe performance and execution of the genicular nerve blocks in simulation and clinical practice. This project's foundation was an ultrasound-guided genicular nerve block (USGNB) objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) template. Evidence-based research on the most recent data relating to this project was used. This process ensured a safe and efficient USGNB template for SRNAs to practice and improve their skills. The availability of this template will allow students to be more comfortable when performing this block in the clinical setting, which creates a safer patient experience.

Once the OSCE template was completed, a traditional PowerPoint was created utilizing the same research. We then received ten volunteers from first-year anesthesia students at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). The ten students were split into two groups of five, with one group receiving the OSCE template-based learning and the other receiving traditional learning via PowerPoint presentation. Each group was then evaluated on the information learned. Following the test, a survey was also sent for feedback. The OSCE template group performed higher on the test's evaluation portion and was more satisfied with survey feedback. Survey results also concluded that the OSCE template method was superior to traditional learning regarding the safe and effective performance of the USGNB.
