Abstract
The photophysical and photochemical behavior of poly(methylphenylphosphazene), PMPP, and poly(methylphenylphosphazene)-graft-polystyrene copolymers have been studied. In both types of polymers a broad red-shifted emission at about 430 nm is attributed to fluorescence from a singlet with a significant geometry change in the excited state relative to the ground state. UV irradiation of PMPP results in chain scission in air-saturated methylene chloride, whereas in the absence of molecular oxygen, a bimolecular process, leading to extensive crosslinking and gel formation, predominates. Biphenyl has been identified as a major photoproduct from PMPP both in the presence and absence of molecular oxygen. The degradation of PMPP is not inhibited by triplet state quenchers, and hence the photoinduced reactions of PMPP are proposed to originate from the singlet state.
