Abstract
Public library mission statements indicate institutional purpose, values, and strategic priorities, which offer insight into how libraries define their roles and identity within their communities. This study examined 536 public libraries across seven U.S. states (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico, Washington, and West Virginia) to identify common themes, patterns, and the role of language in mission statements. Findings indicate a high degree of thematic convergence with variation reflecting local context. Analysis of language revealed most mission statements blended operational and aspirational language. This hybrid approach suggests libraries position themselves as reliable service providers and active contributors to community well-being.
