Abstract
The purpose of this introductory chapter is to orient the reader to the rest of this guidebook, a practical resource for music teachers in rural schools. As a companion to the first volume on policies and perspectives, this second volume completes the picture with a practical discussion of music education pedagogies and practices in rural America, with the importance of community as a throughline. Beginning by examining the range of tangible and intangible resources that characterize rural music education, this chapter explores the importance of rural communities and their connections to music and music education. A final section previews the following chapters that focus on a range of authentic applications to K-12 music classrooms. Each chapter author takes an asset-based view of rural music education and provides related teaching and learning resources. By focusing on specific teaching settings and practical issues, those chapters address how rural locales shape music teaching and learning processes. They acknowledge that teachers must first understand their “where” (communities) before they can use the appropriate “how” (pedagogies) to address the “what” (teaching practices).
