Abstract
A growing constituency of potential learners (and employers) seek open access postsecondary learning opportunities tailored to part-time students who maintain full-time employment at locations remote from university campuses. Hydrographers, who spend long periods at sea or in remote locations, often have duties that involve considerable off-duty time. Providing access to a relevant and rewarding learning activity to occupy some of this off-duty time would benefit both employee and employer.
This paper describes a joint project, involving three universities and two hydrographic employers, to address this need with a plan to provide over time a complete suite of hydrographic modules required by the hydrographic profession.
The paper describes how the following challenges have been addressed: incorporating sound pedagogical principles to design a learning experience that is interesting, even exciting, as well as informative; trade-offs between CD-based and Web-based open access learning modes; building interactive learning activities into courseware; and multi-campus development and management of open access learning material.
