Abstract

This fiction manuscript can be divided into two parts: three independent stories which are variously located in the contemporary South, and four connected stories which are set in/around Hattiesburg during 1906. Though these stories span over a hundred years’ time, they all seek to explore what it means to survive in the South in the face of greed, violence, and loneliness. The title Within, Without is meant to reflect the two halves of this manuscript: those stories which came from within myself and thus my personal experiences (the first half), and those which have stemmed from historical research and an outward focus on lives which aren’t mine (the latter half). Eventually these two strains of stories will be collected into two separate collections.
