Abstract
Helping the shoe to fit is a collection of short stories and “flash fiction.” This collection explores animal perspectives, the medieval period, mythology, and family dynamics. Poetic devices within these stories put the reader into a position where they must interact with sound and language in the ways that my learning disabilities force me to interact with sound and language. Connected by their focus on the physical expression of sound through words, these stories range from the creepy and off-putting to loving and comforting. This collection gathers the stories in which I test the ability of my range in terms of both story length and genre. From horror to myths and flash fiction to short stories I attempt to navigate the constraints and expectations they place on fiction.
