Abstract
The Gods of Women and their Mothers is a collection of fictional short stories that discusses themes of religion and spirituality as well as the underlying conditions of shame and emotional distance that often result from exposure to fundamentalism. The characters do not stray far from God, however, but find faith and freedom apart from the confines of institutional religion. The stories mostly follow an expanded format of short scenes that rotate in and out of time in order to understand the motivations behind the strange behavior of the characters. This collection was heavily influenced by authors such as Samantha Hunt, Kimberly King Parsons, Marilynne Robinson, Evelyn Waugh, and Mary Robison who allowed me to explore a range of characters and their vulnerabilities.
