Description

Scholarly communication librarians, or those who have responsibilities that fall under the umbrella of scholarly communication (SC), often work alone but rely heavily on colleagues to assist them with their work. Several states, such as Virginia and Florida, have created statewide SC interest groups for the purpose of supporting one another and sharing ideas, and to collaborate on specific initiatives, such as open educational resource adoption.

The Virginia Scholarly Communication Interest Group (VASCIG) is in its sixth year of activity and includes representatives from two-year, four-year, public, and private institutions. The group is a unique example of small and large institutions working together to advance SC and OER initiatives both at individual institutions and across the state. In 2016 the VASCIG was invited to be represented in the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia-Library Advisory Committee (SCHEV-LAC), a committee within the state’s coordinating body for higher education. This invitation is indicative of the success and sustainability of VASCIG.

Claudia Holland is an Associate Professor and the Scholarly Communication Coordinator at Mississippi State University Libraries, Starkville. She arrived in Mississippi in June 2017 before which she was the Head of Scholarly Communication and Copyright at George Mason University Libraries in Fairfax, VA for ten years. Claudia’s experience runs the gamut of scholarly communication but her strong suits are copyright in higher education, open access publishing, institutional repositories (not the back end), and open educational resources. She is passionate about building connections to affect change in open access to research and student access to higher education. Her most recent article, “Streaming Media in an Uncertain Legal Environment: A Model Policy and Best Practices for Academic Libraries,” was published in the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship. Claudia is an active member of the leadership group for the Open Scholarship Initiative, “a global, large-scale, multi-stakeholder effort to improve the flow of information within research and between researchers, policymakers, funders and the public.”
