Abstract

Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) is a low-incidence, high-mortality event. PPH is a leading cause of maternal death among women in the United States. Therefore, anesthesia providers must recognize and treat PPH effectively and efficiently. The University of Southern Mississippi’s Nurse Anesthesia Program does not have an educational tool, such as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), that students can use to learn about this emergency obstetric event. To fill this void, this DNP project aims to develop a PPH OSCE including a cognitive aid. The cognitive aid will support quick recall of life-saving interventions, reduce provider error, and improve communication.

After thorough research and the development of the OSCE with a cognitive aid, ten participants voluntarily completed a survey. These ten participants were divided into two groups: Group A and Group B. Group A received information regarding the anesthetic management of PPH in a more traditional form, including a PowerPoint presentation and reading material. Group B received information via the OSCE template with the provided cognitive aid. Next, the two groups took a posttest evaluating the effectiveness of the assigned learning method in preparing the student nurse anesthetist (SRNA) to manage PPH.

Once each participant completed the survey, the data collection process began. Using the T-Test method, quantitative and qualitative data was yielded to compare the differences between the two groups. Although data results revealed no significant difference between the groups, positive feedback was obtained regarding the OSCE’s impact in providing essential knowledge on PPH while instilling provider confidence.
